So if you want to spend about $400-$600 on a manual rack go ahead and remove it. I pulled the belt off the pump of my 5th gen when it had a leaky line and couldn't hold fluid. It didn't take long to ruin the rack.

RE: Uninstalling Power Steering system

I don't think anyone here other than the guy above has removed a perfectly working p/s system.

Try hondatech?

RE: Uninstalling Power Steering system

take off the belt, remove pulley an pump, loop the line. watch power stering fluid leak whereever you park for a few days an your done! when i removed mine i didnt like it, then a week or so went by and it wasnt bad, its been a good while now of not having it an i love it! good luck holmes. ill try an get pics up for you but im moving this weekend and might not have the internet for a week or so.

RE: Uninstalling Power Steering system

I know what I'm gettin myself into by removing it. My moms big SUV's power steering was out for a long time. Its only a pain when parking since your wheels are not in motion much. So does anyone have any help with removing it?

RE: Uninstalling Power Steering system

Pull the belt off the powersteering pump and drive like that for a few days. Then decide if you really want to loose powersteering.

RE: Uninstalling Power Steering system

I'd listen to Kristen on this one--she had to drive her third gen. part of the way to NPM without power steering. It doesn't strike me as a fun experience.

My first car was a 1989 Plymouth Acclaim with a tempermental power steering pump. I lost power steering on several occasions, and even for a minute or so, it killed my shoulders. And it was frightening during certain corners. I'm not sure the weight of the car would have a huge impact on the ease of driving without power steering. I say if a car comes with that feature, leave it alone. What's next, you'll decide to disable/remove the ABS, too? That'd be detrimental in most driving situations.

You want something to lighten your car that won't cost money? If you're feeling hardcore, find out how to strip out the sound deadener material in your interior. That should save more than the 15-ish pounds of the power steering pump, and the only drawback I can think of is that road/engine noise will be louder in the cabin.

RE: Uninstalling Power Steering system

WIRE TUCK!!!!!!1

RE: Uninstalling Power Steering system

Yeah but having less pulleys to turn would help to. Basically I'm bored but dont have money to spend but I need something to work on haha

RE: Uninstalling Power Steering system

Why? The idea is rediculous. You won't save more than about 15lbs. tops.

RE: Uninstalling Power Steering system

No one has done it? Really?

Uninstalling Power Steering system

So since I need to start saving my money i'm looking for ways to improve my cars performance without spending money, so why not lose some weight and rotational loss by gutting the power steering. Has anyone done this and be able to lay out what all goes into the uninstall and what belt size I would need? And if you have done it or know of someone who has do they have any complaints about it? The car isn't very heavy so I cant imagine it being that bad to park with no power steering. My car has basically become a nice day driver and soon to start autox since I've worked out all my bugs. Any info would be appreciated.
