No help there.
Here's what I've done:

New spark plug in cylinder 1

New dist. cap and rotor

New NGK spark plug wires

New Main ground wire

New Ignition Control Module (located inside the dizzy)

Valve adjustment done

Cleaned IACV

Swapped Fuel Injectors on cylinders 1 and 2

Seafoamed the top end (vacuum hose and fuel, but not in the oil)

Fuel filter less than a year old

Cleaned the EGR ports

I think that's everything. The light hasn't come back since I cleaned the EGR ports, but it hasn't been that long and I haven't driven that far. The CEL usually only pops up when I drive for 45 minutes to an hour. I'm driving kinda far tonight, so we'll see if it comes back on my way home.

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

I forgot that your car was a SS. Doesn't really matter though as I don't think honda started putting in ghost codes till the k-powered cars appeared.

P030x codes are government mandated generic codes. The manufacturer specific codes are much better at telling you what is actually wrong.

You should still consider swaping fuel injectors between the cylinders if you code keeps coming back. I had my fuel rail off dozens of times in a matter of a weekend and didn't rip any o-rings. I'd suggest a small amount of Vasolene on the o-rings when you put it back together... goes much easier and it's the same principle as putting oil on the seal of an oil filter.

Good luck with the code though.

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

Yeah the code reader at autozone lists it as a "manufacturer something-or-other ignition system blah blah blah" The guy at autozone says it is related to the first code. ( p0301) I had the mechanic that works next to me look the code up on alldata ( like I said) and it doesn't give a description of what the code means. Like it isn't a legitimate code. (Probably just something so the stealership can charge you extra money for people who don't work on their own shit) It did give the 2 possible causes of the code, which were clogged EGR ports or valve lash out of adjustment.
I cleaned the EGR ports last night. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. They pop right out with a small slide hammer. I only did 5 of the 6 because I didn't want to take off the fuel rail to get to the last one and risk ripping an injector o-ring. I was amazed my dealership actually had the port plugs in stock. Hopefully this solves my problem. If not, I may do another valve adjustment in case I messed up on one. I'd just like to double check the clearances if the code comes back.

Wish me luck. BTW, it is pretty much impossible to over-rev my car. The computer won't let the sport shift downshift if the revs are too high.

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

Uh, my scan book does not list p1399 as an official honda code, and a quick search on the net agrees with that, but it doesn't seem to be too uncommon for hondas to show them. I bet it's a "fake" code that will tell the dealer/corporate if you over-revved or went too fast. Clear it and see if it pops back up.

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

Goddammit! It's back on. THis time with 2 codes P0301- random cylinder 1 misfire, and P1399- which I looked up on AllData and it says that it is valve clearance out of adjustment, (which I just did a valve adjustment not too long ago) or clogged EGR ports. I just cleaned the EGR the other day, but the ports probably aren't all the way clean. I'm going to pull the port plugs out and do it the right way.

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

It's been a few days, and still no CEL. It apparently was a dirty IACV that was causing my random misfire.

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

So I cleaned the IACV yesterday, and no CEL yet. Keep your fingers crossed for me, but I think this was it. It figures. I spent $250 on tune-up parts and a new Ignition Control Module, and all I needed was an $8 can of seafoam. I don't know if I should be happy or angry. I'm a little mad that I spent all that money, but I guess I needed all that shit anyway. The ICM failed the test, and I was overdue for a tune-up anyway. And my new NGK wires look pretty badass. But still. I think if a dirty IACV was the cause of all my problems, I should've gotten a CEL for the IACV or a bouncy, rough idle, or something. Instead I'm just playing a guessing game. I probably shouldn't count my chickens before they're hatched. The CEL may come back on tomorrow. But for now, I'm hoping for the best. Once again, I'll keep you guys updated if it comes back.

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

I'm gonna try cleaning the IACV soon, and probably have to adjust the idle after that. It doesn't idle rough, but the IACV is listed as a possible cause of a random cyl.1 miss. Might do a compression test soon too. I'd like to do a comp/leakdown test, but I can't find anybody who has the tester for it. Lots of compression testers around, but no comp/leakdown testers. And I don't want to spend $60 on something I'm only gonna use once.....

I'll keep ya updated guys. Wish me luck

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

The car doesn't run any differently. It is just the computer telling me there is a problem. I'm assuming it's a random misfire because a constant misfire makes the light blink and the car run rough. I have a solid CEL and no performance loss. Oh and BTW, I don't know if checking the plug will do any good. I just replaced the cyl.1 plug like a month ago. Only the cyl. 1 plug, not the others, so the other 3 are obviously going to be quite a bit dirtier than the new one in cyl.1.

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

Pull the spark plug and inspect it. Compare the color and amount of deposits to another plug (either #3 or 4 would be best as you haven't done anything to them yet).

Can you hear/feel the misfire, or is it just the car saying there is a problem? Is the misfire constant or random?

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

preludeman92 (9/29/2008)
The random misfire code should have a cylinder number attached to it. Then I put in a new ignition Control Module (inside the dizzy) because mine was tested and failed. I really thought this was gonna be it....... but it wasn't. The code came back. $117 down the drain. (kind of, I mean it was bad, but replacing it didn't fix anything.) Somebody help me. I'm getting really tired of this.

Maybe if somebody downs their 5th gen for the winter I could borrow somebody's distributor so I can see if that solves my problem before I shell out 300-400 bucks for one. Some one let me know if they wanna help.

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

Okay, so I did a valve adjustment, and the CEL came back on. Then I cleared it, and it hasn't been back on since, and I haven't done anything else to the luuuude since then. I'm baffled. It's been a week with no CEL, so..... I guess it's good, but knowing my luck the CEL won't come back on until I'm in line at e-check next summer.

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

If you're careful, you don't need to replace injector seals when you play with the fuel system. Same with the crush washers around the banjo bolts.

Check the internal resistance of the injectors while you're checking the injectors. They should all be the same (or really close).

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

So I replaced the spark plug in cylinder 1 and the Cel came back. Then I replaced my main ground because it was corroded all the way through. I drove to C-bus and back with no Cel until..... it came back on as I was getting off the freeway at Loren's exit. I am so pissed right now. I checked the Helms and it says to check everything from switching injectors between cylinders ( which I don't want to do because you have to replace the seals and o-rings when you remove them) to determine if it is an injector, to checking valve clearance, compression\leakdown, fuel pressure, blah blah blah. I don't know where to start. Fuck a B.

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

Okay, so here's the deal: I put in my NGK wires and drove to go work for my dad again. After about 45 minutes on the road the CEL came on again. So on my way home I bought a cap and rotor. The old cap looked decent, but the rotor was toast. It is all corroded at the end of the contact point and there is a small burn just below it. So I hope this solves my problem because the only other things it could be is spark plugs ($50) or an injector ($160 from honda, $121 online). Wish me luck.

RE: I had an OH CRAP moment

preludeman92 (8/5/2008)
Actually, I like OBD2 for completely stock cars, but OBD1 for tuner cars. I was almost there and my CEL came on. I figured it was gonna be a stupid code like the EGR or something kinda insignificant. I went to Advance Auto Parts and had them read the code........................
Cylinder 1 misfire

So I know it's not catastrophic, but it is a little worrying, and confusing, since I always thought the CEL blinks for a misfire, which mine definately didn't. I cleared the code, and it hasn't come back since, thankfully. (knock on wood) But now I gotta do a tune up. I don't think one has ever been done to my car. I replaced the plugs when I first bought it, but not a full tune-up with wires, coil, cap, and plugs.

So I ordered a set of NGK wires today from Summit. They should be here on Tuesday. Yes, they are blue and will clash a little with the red and black thing I got going on, but I have heard that they are like some of the best wires you can get. ( if there is such a thing) I will be ordering the rest of the shit as I get a little more dough. I know a cap and coil aren't too expensive.

Anyway, needless to say, this whole ordeal is gonna push back me lowering the lude for a little while. It hopefully won't be too long though because I'm trying to pick up some extra cash by working for my dad after I get out of work at my job. Working 2 jobs sucks ass, but hey, I need a drop. lol
